Home security tips Provided by the Hawthorne Police

When you go on vacation - stop your mail and newspapers. Put lights in your home on timers, so it appears someone is home even if you're not. A burglary only takes minutes. Ask your neighbors to keep an eye on your house and vice versa. Exchange work and cell phone numbers with your neighbors. Secure doors and windows with dead bolts and secure locks. Don't forget sliding glass doors - a broomstick handle works well and is easy and inexpensive. Evaluate your own home as if you were a burglar looking for points of entry. Think how you would get in if you locked yourself out. When not at home, close windows and curtains so a thief cannot view the contents of your home. Dog doors are an easy way to break into houses. Children can enter via dog doors and unlock the door from the inside. If you have a dog door, examine how to make it more secure. Be wary of solicitors selling services. Do not let strangers into your home, always ask for business licenses or city permits. Inform police about anyone suspicious. Keep your bushes trimmed so they will not conceal a burglar's efforts to break into your home. To improve security, install Motion Detector lights around your home . To improve chances of obtaining fingerprints, keep windows and surfaces in your home clean.

Before you leave…

Double check that all blinds are closed, windows and doors are locked, and unneeded appliances/lamps/etc. are off. (Consider connecting appliances to powerstrips to make disconnecting appliances easier by simply turning off the powerstrips.) Double check that your refrigerator is shut Backup important computer files and store the backups and any important papers/valuables in a bank safe deposit box Have your significant other double check all your work, to avoid that nagging "did I turn off the...?" feeling that you will get once you are airborne..! Other good ideas… Clean out the refrigerator Take out the trash, and arrange with neighbors to put your garbage out for trash pickup if necessary Clean house thoroughly (especially the garbage disposal and toilets!) Make sure there is sufficient balance in your bank and credit card accounts to cover anticipated (and, more importantly, unanticipated) expenses without bouncing a check or busting your credit limit
